Experts by Experience

When developing, insightful, meaningful and ultimately human interventions, PRICE Training recognises the significant value those with lived experience can contribute to practice.

As part of developing our training programmes, PRICE Training is pleased to work with a number of individuals who have considerable insight into receiving services where they have experienced being restrained. Our course delivery and development has had direct input from individuals who have experienced restraint and/or restrictive practices.

As a training provider, it is all too easy to confine our course curricula to the established theories and approaches as well as our own past experiences as practitioners. However, for training to remain relevant, contemporary and relatable, it is essential we incorporate the experiences and very real feelings of those who have been physically restrained.

Grant Quayle; expert by experience

Grant has been a PRICE Trainer since 2015. As part of a PRICE Training lived experience initiative, Grant offered to share his experiences of being restrained as a child on camera. As part of the project, extracts from Grant’s filming are now used on PRICE Training courses as well as Grant delivering training himself. Grant found the project really rewarding, particularly the opportunity to address all current and future delegates of PRICE Training about the things he would want those who provide support to others to consider when making the decision to use restraint.

“As a kid, having been restrained many times myself, I hope I bring a different dimension to our training. As I have become older, I feel more comfortable and confident to share my experiences in the hope that others can learn about the impact restraint can have on an individual’s self-worth and life chances.”

Listening to those individuals who have been repeatedly restrained is a very powerful reminder to those of us who are charged with the responsibility to make decisions as to why, when and how somebody should be held.

Our Initiatives

PRICE Training supports a number of customers to develop their own ‘experts by experience’ initiatives.

By helping facilitate discussion or working groups of current residents, pupils or ex-service users around the use of restraint, leadership and management, customers can gain invaluable insight into how the service performs and what can be done to improve it. PRICE Training welcomes any approach from customer organisations to support in the development of their own lived experience initiatives around the use of restraint.
